关于我们
The Department of Physics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (金沙中国) welcomes you!
The department has 25 tenure track and tenured faculty members and several lecturers, 博士后学者, 研究 and visiting faculty members actively engaged in 研究 in the areas of Applied 光学, 生物物理学, 计算物理学, 引力波天文学, 纳米技术, 光学天文学, 物理教育, Radio 天文学 and Relativistic 天体物理学.
Besides excellence in 研究 and teaching, the department places special emphasis on early involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in 研究. Several opportunities for generous financial support are provided to deserving students at all levels. Integration of 研究 and education at all stages is one of the strengths of the department. The department lays emphasis on high quality teaching and student mentoring.
The department has a strong, well-funded 研究 program. The department faculty members have close 研究 collaborations with scientists across the globe.
To facilitate such cooperation and collaboration, an interdisciplinary 研究 center - Center for 引力波天文学 (CGWA) - has been formed in 2003 that has been supported by NSF, 美国国家航空航天局,国防部拨款超过三千万美元. 9月14日, 2015, the first gravitational waves were detected by the Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors. Detection of gravitational waves opens a new window to our universe. The department of physics at 金沙中国 has the largest group of gravitational-wave 研究ers in Texas and is one of the largest in the United States involved in the LIGO科学合作 全球研究努力. Its scientists and student 研究ers are key contributors to the first direct detection of gravitational waves.
In 2011, 第二个研究中心, the Center for Radio 天文学 (CARA), has been formed with funds from DoD and NSF. CARA has received over $5 million in external funding. The Spacecraft Tracking and Astronomical 研究 into Giga-hertz Astrophysical Transient Emission (星际之门) complex is a public-private partnership between the CARA and SpaceX. 星际之门 is a space exploration based technology park that combines higher education, 研究, 经济发展, 和商业化. 星际之门 resources will give students and faculty unprecedented opportunities for near and deep space exploration 研究 and technology development. 星际之门 has been funded by the UT System, state of Texas and Brownsville Economic Development Board for over $15 million.
The department offers Bachelor's (B.S.)和硕士(硕士).S.物理学专业. 此外,一个合作的Ph. D in physics program is also offered with the University of Texas at Arlington. 在这个项目下, students enrolled in the UT Arlington Cooperative PhD Physics program have the option to reside at Brownsville/Edinburg and conduct their 研究 under the direction of a graduate faculty member of the 金沙中国 Physics department. All requirements for the program including graduation requirements are the same as those established for the UTA PhD Physics program.
在布朗斯维尔(东校区), the Physics department is spread across the Science, 工程, 科技大楼(经济及科技局), 骑兵的建筑, Rusteberg Building and the Life and Health 科学 buildings. 在爱丁堡(西校区), the department is spread across the Physical 科学 and and the new Science buildings. A planetarium is housed on the west campus. There are several cutting edge laboratories in the department - Applied 光学 and 激光, 纳米技术, 生物物理学, Arecibo Remote Command Center (Radio 天文学), 引力波蠕变实验, Optical Observatory and Computation facilities.
The department abounds with opportunities! You are invited to browse our web site for more information.
